TEN people have died after a head on crash between a truck and a taxi on the N1 in Modimolle.

Provincial Road and Transport spokesperson Matome Moremi said all North bound lanes are closed for now and the truck is on fire.

“The road might be closed fully to clear the scene, but we will inform you. In the interest of time, those traveling from Kranskop must off Ramp to Modimolle to use R101 and those traveling from Mookgophong /Mokopane must also use R101 to avoid delays,” Moremi said.

He said the N1 Kranskop and Mookgopong off ramp are closed in both directions for forensic investigations.

Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC Makoma Makhurupetje extended condolences to the families of 10 people who lost their lives in the accident.

Makhurupetje went to the scene of the accident and said preliminary findings show that the accident happened after a speeding taxi lost control and collided head on with a truck;

“This is another sad day in our province. We have lost ten people in an accident that could have been prevented if the required speed limit was adhered to. This is heart wrenching indeed. “Although the exact cause of this horrific accident is yet to be unravelled, I wish to extend our deepest condolences to the families of the ten people who lost their lives and further wish a speedy recovery to those injured,” she said.

Motorists are also advised to rest in between trips as fatigue can be the biggest killer.
