Awaiting trial prisoners escape from holding cells

The prisoners faced various charges including armed robbery and attempted murder.

Six awaiting trial prisoners have escaped from the holding cells at Letsitele police station outside Tzaneen in Limpopo.

Police spokesperson Moatshe Ngoepe says police were busy giving food to prisoners when the six escaped on Saturday afternoon.

They faced various charges including armed robbery and attempted murder.

Ngoepe says police are investigating the incident.

“It is alleged that six awaiting trial prisoners have on Saturday at about 16h45 escaped when they were busy being given food by the police. The escapees were identified as Adam Baloyi, Eddie Baloyi, Bennedict Ledwaba, Doctor Kubayi, Lordwick Mhlongo and Frank Nyambi,” adds Ngoepe.
