DA lays criminal charges against Minister Mokonyane

On Wednesday, the Democratic Alliance laid a criminal charge of culpable homicide against the former Minister of Water Affairs, Nomvula Makonyane, for the tragic and preventable death of a 6 year old boy, Nseko Knowledge Mhlongo.

Nseko died after he fell into a manhole of the incomplete Giyani Bulk water project. This is yet another case of an uncaring ANC government killing the people.

The bulk of the blame lies with Minister Mokonyane and her previous department who failed to ensure the safety of residents when Khato Civils abandoned the project which ballooned to a R3.5 billion disaster.

The billion rand project was intended to supply water to Giyani and surrounding villages.

It was abandoned after the Department of Water and Sanitation allegedly failed to pay the contractor.

There are countless open ditches around the Giyani area which the department failed to fill after Khato Civil abandoned the project.

This is also not an isolated incident. The ANC and corruption are bedfellows, which rob people of opportunities and their lives.

It is the third known case of a person dying after falling into ditches/manholes of incomplete bulk water projects in less than 6 months in Limpopo and despite this there seems to be no effort by the department to fill up these dangerous trenches.

Although an Inquest docket has been opened by the police, we were insistent that a criminal investigation be opened to start collecting evidence.

The DA has laid the charge against Minister Mokonyane as we are determined to ensure accountability for the uncaring ANC executive and officials who failed in their duty to take the preventive measures that would have averted this disastrous fire.

The failing ANC government is literarily killing the people of South Africa because of neglect and corruption. Senseless loss of lives is occurring on a regular basis because the failing ANC has abandoned the people in favour of cadre enrichment that steals from the poor.

A DA government will prioritise the implementation of an infrastructure programme that is free from corruption and abuse by unscrupulous contractors and politicians.

Only the DA can build One South Africa for All where the people come first, service delivery is sped up and corruption is sped up.
