AN MEC has been accused of paying R30 million to a Gupta-linked company even though his department is broke.
Daily Sun is in possession of a letter sent to all service providers saying the North West Health Department has run out of funds.
However, it has come to light that the department paid R30 million to Gupta-linked company Mediosa for a mobile clinic that was not delivered.
Apparently, the department planned to spend a total of R180 million on the mobile clinic.
The department, led by MEC Magome Masike, has recently been in the news due to the shortage of medicine, the use of a private Gupa-linked company for ambulance services and for not paying service providers on time.
Department head Thabo Lekalakala said R30 million had been spent on a pilot programme due to run until 2020.
He said Mediosa was contracted to provide mobile health services to poor areas and the mobile buses they had were far more sophisticated than normal ones.
EFF provincial secretary Papiki Babuile said the deal was made with Mediosa without following proper procedures.
He said Mediosa was approached by the department after seeing work it had done in India and the Free State.
