THE Mandela legacy continues!

In the spirit of late president Tata Nelson Mandela, Habitat for Humanity SA in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation will host the Nelson Mandela International Build Week from 17 to 21 July at Orange Farm, south of Joburg.

The goal of the programme is to build 67 homes for 67 families in honour of the annual call for people to commit one minute of their time for every year of Mandela’s time in prison
The organisation’s communications officer, Karina van den Heever, said their strategy shifted in 2013.

Since then, they have not been building homes only but entire communities.

“To bring this to life, Habitat use a ‘P4’ approach – people, public, private, partnership.

“This has become the driving force to bring active citizens together, with the help of business and government to address the country’s housing

Mzansi has a current housing backlog of 2 million, with growing urbanisation worsening the situation.

The organisation’s national director, Patrick Kulati, said they were organising South Africans to become actively involved in uplifting communities. Yase Godlo, a manager for Mandela Day, which is held every year on Madiba’s birthday, 18 July, said the day presented an opportunity to honour and bring to life the vision, values and leadership of our country’s great statesman.
